A scholar and a boatman story
There was a boatman in a
village who was very poor. He was uneducated. He used to row
the boat from morning to evening to maintain his family. Once on a summer
day, a scholar got into his boat. The boatman started rowing the
boat and the boat moved forward smoothly. Once the scholar said to the
boatman, "Have you read history? The boatman said, "No." The
scholar told him that without the knowledge of history, one-fourth of his life
had been spoiled. Hearing this, the boatman became sad. After a while, the
scholar again said, "Have you read geography?" The boatman
replied in the negative. Then the scholar told the boatman that without the
knowledge of geography, half of his life had been spoiled. Then they both
remained silent for a while. Then the scholar broke the silence and said to the
boatman, "Have you any science knowledge?" The boatman
replied in the negative. At that time, the scholar told him that without
the knowledge of science three-fourths of his life had been spoiled. So,
his life has no value. Hearing this, the boatman kept silent in his sad
mind. Suddenly, the sky was overcast with black clouds. A strong wind
began to blow. In this situation, the scholar was very frightened.
Meanwhile, the boatman said to the scholar, "Sir, do you know how to
swim?" Then the scholar replied in the negative in a pitiful
voice. Hearing this reply, the boatman said, “The boat is
sinking. Now I see that your whole life has been spoiled. Your
bookish knowledge is of no use. So, pray to Allah for your safety."

এক গ্রামে এক নৌকার মাঝি ছিল সে খুবই দরিদ্র ছিল। সে অশিক্ষিত ছিল। সে সংসার চালাতে সকাল থেকে সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত নৌকা চালাত। একবার গ্রীষ্মের দিনে একজন পণ্ডিত তার নৌকায় উঠলেন। মাঝি নৌকা চালাতে শুরু করল এবং নৌকাটি মসৃণভাবে এগিয়ে চলল। একদা পণ্ডিত মাঝিকে বললেন, "তুমি ইতিহাস পড়েছ? মাঝি বলল, "না।" পণ্ডিত তাকে বললেন যে ইতিহাসের জ্ঞান ছাড়া তার জীবনের এক-চতুর্থাংশ নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। একথা শুনে নৌকার মাঝি মন খারাপ করল। কিছুক্ষণ পর পণ্ডিত আবার বললেন, "তুমি ভূগোল পড়েছ?" মাঝি নেতিবাচক জবাব দিল। তখন পণ্ডিত মাঝিকে বললেন যে ভূগোলের জ্ঞান ছাড়া তার জীবনের অর্ধেকটা নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। তারপর দুজনেই কিছুক্ষণ চুপ করে রইল। এরপর পণ্ডিত নীরবতা ভেঙে নৌকার মাঝিকে বললেন, "বিজ্ঞান সম্পর্কে তোমার কোনো জ্ঞান আছে?" নৌকার মাঝি নেতিবাচক উত্তর দিল। ঐ সময়, পণ্ডিত তাকে বলেছিলেন যে বিজ্ঞানের জ্ঞান ছাড়া তার জীবনের তিন-চতুর্থাংশ নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। তাই, তার জীবনের কোনো মূল্য নেই। এই কথা শুনে নৌকার মাঝি তার বিষণ্ণ মনে চুপ করে রইল। হঠাৎ আকাশ কালো মেঘে ঢেকে গেল। প্রবল বাতাস বইতে লাগল। এই অবস্থায়, পণ্ডিত খুব ভয় পেয়ে গেলেন। ইতোমধ্যে নৌকার মাঝি পণ্ডিতকে বললেন, "স্যার, আপনি কি সাঁতার জানেন?" তখন পণ্ডিত করুণ কণ্ঠে নেতিবাচক জবাব দিলেন। এই উত্তর শুনে নৌকার মাঝি বলল, "নৌকাটা ডুবে যাচ্ছে। এখন দেখছি আপনার সারা জীবন নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। আপনার বইয়ের জ্ঞানের কোন লাভ নেই। তাই আপনার নিরাপত্তার জন্য আল্লাহর কাছে প্রার্থনা কর।"
