Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a charismatic and undisputed leader of the Bangladeshi independence movement. He was the father of the Bengali nation. He was born on March 17, 1920, in Tungipara of Gopalganj district. He played an important role in the independence movement of Bangladesh. He was the first President of Bangladesh and served as Prime Minister several times. Actually, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started his political career in 1940. At first, he was associated with the All-India Muslim League. Then he became a member of the East Pakistan Awami League. Later he won the election in 1970. At that time the Pakistani military regime refused to allow him to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. As a result, the liberation war of Bangladesh began with violent repression. During the war, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman inspired the people of Bangladesh with his inspirational speeches and leadership. Under his leadership, Bengalees gained independence from Pakistan on 16 December 1971. And then he became the first president of Bangladesh. After becoming president, he resolved to establish a democratic government to rebuild the war-torn country. But his efforts were completely thwarted by rampant corruption and political instability. Then in 1975, he was killed along with most of his family members in a military coup. At present, he is widely regarded as a great hero of the Bangladesh liberation war.
