May Day is International Workers' Day. The day is a memorable day in the life of world workers. In history, 1 May is known as May Day or Labor Day or International Workers' Day. The workers in 80 countries around the world celebrate International Workers' Day with great tribute. In May 1886, the industrialists of the American Chicago city exploited the workers very much. At this, the workers became fed up with the exploitation of those industrialists and they started a movement against the industrialists. The main objective of their movement was to fix the fixed hours for their work and get proper wages according to their work. However, the industrialists tried very hard to suppress the movement. As a result, Chicago's Haymarket Square was flooded with workers' blood. In fact, the industrialists tried their best to stop the voice of the workers forever. Many worker leaders were hanged for that movement. But this did not stop the movement of the workers. At last, the workers won their movement. And, as a result of the movement, the workers got the opportunity to work 8 hours instead of 12/13 hours a day. Besides, the workers got many more opportunities for living. Later, 1 May was declared International Workers' Day. Since then, 1 May has been celebrated as International Workers' Day. So, May Day is celebrated with great respect by all the workers of the world every year.

মে দিবস হল আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রমিক দিবস। দিনটি বিশ্ব শ্রমিকদের জীবনে একটি স্মরণীয় দিন। ইতিহাসে পহেলা মে মে দিবস হিসাবে পরিচিত। বিশ্বের ৮০টি দেশের শ্রমিকরা মহান শ্রদ্ধার সাথে আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রমিক দিবস উদযাপন করে। ১৮৮৬ সালের মে মাসে আমেরিকার শিকাগো শহরের শিল্পপতিরা শ্রমিকদের খুব শোষণ করত। এতে শ্রমিকরা ঐ শিল্পপতিদের শোষণে বিরক্ত হয়ে শিল্পপতিদের বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলন শুরু করেছিল। তাদের আন্দোলনের মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছিল তাদের কাজের জন্য নির্দিষ্ট সময় বেঁধে দেওয়া এবং কাজ অনুযায়ী উপযুক্ত মজুরি পাওয়া। কিন্তু শিল্পপতিরা আন্দোলনকে দমন করার আপ্রাণ চেষ্টা করেছিল। ফলে শিকাগোর হেমার্কেট স্কোয়ারে শ্রমিকদের রক্তে বন্যা বয়ে যায়। প্রকৃতপক্ষে, শিল্পপতিরা শ্রমিকদের কণ্ঠ চিরতরে বন্ধ করার সর্বাত্মক চেষ্টা করেছিল। এই আন্দোলনের জন্য অনেক শ্রমিক নেতার ফাঁসি হয়েছিল। কিন্তু এতে শ্রমিকদের আন্দোলন থেমে থাকেনি। অবশেষে শ্রমিকরা তাদের আন্দোলনে জয়ী হয়। আর আন্দোলনের ফলে শ্রমিকরা দিনে ১২/১৩ ঘণ্টার পরিবর্তে ৮ ঘণ্টা কাজ করার সুযোগ পায়। এছাড়া শ্রমিকরা জীবনধারণের জন্য আরও অনেক সুযোগ-সুবিধা পেয়েছিল। পরবর্তীতে ১ লা মে কে আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রমিক দিবস হিসাবে ঘোষণা করা হয়।সেই থেকে ১ লা মে আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রমিক দিবস হিসাবে পালিত হয়ে আসছে। তাই প্রতি বছর বিশ্বের সকল শ্রমিকরা অত্যন্ত শ্রদ্ধার সাথে মে দিবস পালন করে।
