Water is one of the most important elements of the environment. The other name of water is life. No living being on this earth can survive without water. This essential water is polluted in many ways. Nowadays water pollution is a great problem worldwide. The main causes of water pollution are industrial waste, human waste from unsanitary hanging latrines, oil emitted from water vehicles, pesticides and chemical fertilizers used in the croplands, etc. These harmful substances mix with ponds, canals, beels, rivers, and seawater and pollute the water. And, by drinking and using this polluted water, people get sick and suffer from various waterborne diseases like diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, and various allergic skin diseases. Besides, fish in different water logs including rivers and seas are dying due to water pollution. Many species of fish are on the verge of extinction today. If this situation of water pollution continues, many species of fish will be extinct from the world forever. Again due to water pollution, our national fish, Hilsa, is on the verge of extinction. Really, people are themselves responsible for water pollution. If people were aware of water pollution, water would never be polluted. However, it is very urgent to prevent water pollution. First people have to be aware of preventing water pollution. After that, in no case, industrial waste will be allowed to mix with the river water. Separate space should be set aside for the disposal of industrial waste. Making of hanging latrines along canals, beels and rivers should be banned. Boundaries should be provided around the croplands during the rainy season so that the chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in the crops can’t mix with the water of the canals, beels, and rivers. Above all, the government should take strict steps to prevent water pollution.

পানি পরিবেশের অন্যতম একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উপাদান। পানির অপর নাম জীবন। এই পৃথিবীতে কোন জীবই পানি ছাড়া বাঁচতে পারে না। এই অত্যাবশ্যকীয় পানি নানাভাবে দূষিত হয়। বর্তমানে বিশ্বব্যাপী পানি দূষণ একটি বড় সমস্যা। পানি দূষণের প্রধান কারণগুলো হল শিল্প বর্জ্য, অস্বাস্থ্যকর ঝুলন্ত ল্যাট্রিন থেকে মানুষের বর্জ্য, পানিডর যানবাহন থেকে নির্গত তেল, ফসলের জমিতে ব্যবহৃত কীটনাশক এবং রাসায়নিক সার ইত্যাদি। এই ক্ষতিকারক পদার্থগুলি পুকুর, খাল, বিল, নদী ও সমুদ্রের পানিতে মিশে যায় এবং পানি দূষিত করে। আর এই দূষিত পানি পান ও ব্যবহার করে মানুষ অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়ে এবং বিভিন্ন পানিবাহিত রোগ যেমন ডায়রিয়া, কলেরা, আমাশয় এবং বিভিন্ন অ্যালার্জি জনিত চর্মরোগে আক্রান্ত হয়।এছাড়া পানি দূষণে নদী-সাগরসহ বিভিন্ন জলাশয়ে মাছ মারা যাচ্ছে। অনেক প্রজাতির মাছ আজ বিলুপ্তির পথে। পানি দূষণের এই অবস্থা চলতে থাকলে পৃথিবী থেকে অনেক প্রজাতির মাছ চিরতরে বিলুপ্ত হয়ে যাবে। আবার পানি দূষণের কারণে আমাদের জাতীয় মাছ ইলিশ বিলুপ্তির পথে। আসলে পানি দূষণের জন্য মানুষ নিজেরাই দায়ী। যদি মানুষ পানি দূষণ সম্পর্কে সচেতন হতো তাহলে পানি কখনো দূষিত হতো না। যাইহোক, পানি দূষণ রোধ করা খুবই জরুরি। পানি দূষণ রোধে প্রথমে মানুষকে সচেতন হতে হবে। এরপর কোনো অবস্থাতেই শিল্পবর্জ্য নদীর পানিতে মিশতে দেওয়া হবে না। শিল্প বর্জ্য ফেলার জন্য আলাদা জায়গা নির্ধারণ করতে হবে। খাল, বিল ও নদীর ধারে ঝুলন্ত ল্যাট্রিন নির্মাণ নিষিদ্ধ করতে হবে। বর্ষাকালে ফসলি জমির চারপাশে বাউন্ডারি দিতে হবে যাতে ফসলে ব্যবহৃত রাসায়নিক সার ও কীটনাশক খাল, বিল ও নদীর পানিতে মিশে যেতে না পারে। সর্বোপরি, পানি দূষণ রোধে সরকারকে কঠোর পদক্ষেপ নিতে হবে।
