A farmer is a very important person in society although he is not appreciated by the people of the society. He is the backbone and wheel of the economy of a country. The economy of a country is completely dependent on him. If he does not cultivate, the people of the country will die of hunger even if they have money. In most cases, a farmer is poor and does not have his own land. He cultivates the land of others to produce crops with great difficulty. He works hard day and night in the rain and scorched sun to grow golden crops. He wakes up early in the morning, takes the plow and yoke on his shoulders, and goes to cultivate the land. He has neither cold nor heat to grow golden crops on the land. A good harvest in the land brings a smile to his face. Many times a farmer cannot apply fertilizers and pesticides to the land due to lack of money. To grow crops on the land, he often has to take loans at high-interest rates. After a hard-earned harvest, when the crops are at home, the moneylenders from whom he had taken loans at high interest appear before him. Then the farmer sells the crops to repay the loans to the usurious moneylenders first. After paying off the loans, he has no crops to eat throughout the year. Still, he does not stop working day after day to grow crops. The Bangladesh government has introduced loans for farmers at low interest considering the plight of farmers. Besides, the government has arranged to provide free fertilizers, pesticides, and agricultural implements to the farmers. Due to this, farmers are living a somewhat prosperous life at present. Above all, thinking about the economic development of the country, all of us should cooperate and respect farmers.

একজন কৃষক সমাজের একজন অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি, যদিও তিনি সমাজের মানুষের কাছে সমাদৃত হন না। তিনি একটি দেশের অর্থনীতির মেরুদণ্ড এবং চাকা। একটি দেশের অর্থনীতি সম্পূর্ণরূপে তার উপর নির্ভরশীল। তিনি চাষাবাদ না করলে দেশের মানুষ টাকা থাকলেও অনাহারে মরবে। বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রেই একজন কৃষক দরিদ্র হয় এবং তার নিজের জমি থাকে না। সে অনেক কষ্টে ফসল ফলানোর জন্য অন্যের জমি চাষ করে। সে দিনরাত পরিশ্রম করে বৃষ্টি আর ঝলসে যাওয়া রোদে সোনালী ফসল ফলায়। ভোরবেলা ঘুম থেকে উঠে লাঙ্গল-জোয়াল কাঁধে নিয়ে জমি চাষ করতে যায়। জমিতে সোনালী ফসল ফলানোর জন্য তার ঠান্ডাও নেই বা গরমও নেই। জমিতে ভালো ফলন হলে তার মুখে হাসি ফোটে। অনেক সময় অর্থের অভাবে একজন কৃষক জমিতে সার ও কীটনাশক প্রয়োগ করতে পারেন না। জমিতে ফসল ফলানোর জন্য তাকে প্রায়ই উচ্চ সুদে ঋণ নিতে হয়। কষ্টার্জিত ফসল ঘরে তোলার পর যাদের নিকট থেকে তিনি উচ্চ সুদে ঋণ নিয়েছিলেন সেই মহাজনরা তাঁর সামনে হাজির হয়। তারপর কৃষক প্রথমে সুদখোর মহাজনদের ঋণ পরিশোধের জন্য ফসল বিক্রি করে। ঋণ পরিশোধের পর সারা বছর তার খাওয়ার মতকোনো ফসল থাকে না। তারপরও তিনি ফসল ফলাতে দিনের পর দিন পরিশ্রম বন্ধ করেন না। বাংলাদেশ সরকার কৃষকদের দুর্দশার কথা বিবেচনা করে কৃষকদের জন্য স্বল্প সুদে ঋণ চালু করেছে। এছাড়া সরকার কৃষকদের বিনামূল্যে সার, কীটনাশক ও কৃষি উপকরণ দেওয়ার ব্যবস্থা করেছে। এ কারণে কৃষকরা বর্তমানে কিছুটা স্বচ্ছল জীবনযাপন করছেন। সর্বোপরি, দেশের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নের কথা চিন্তা করে আমাদের সকলের উচিত কৃষকদের সহযোগিতা ও সম্মান করা।
