Sheikh Saddi was a great Persian poet. He was very simple in his ways of life. He used to put on an easy and simple dress all the time. Once the emperor of Iran invited Sheikh Saddi to his palace. The palace was very far from the home of Sheikh Saddi. He set out for the emperor’s palace in an ordinary dress. On the way, he took shelter in a courtier’s house. The courtier and his men didn't show much respect and hospitality to him. Actually, they could not recognize him. Sheikh Saddi also didn't disclose his identity. So, thinking of an ordinary man, they entertained him with very simple food. Sheikh Saddi stayed in the house of the courtier for a night. In the morning, he left the house of the courtier and set out for the emperor’s palace again. Once he reached the emperor’s palace. After reaching the emperor’s palace, the emperor showed him much respect and entertained him well. Sheikh Saddi stayed in the emperor’s palace for some days. On returning home, the emperor gave some gorgeous dresses to Sheikh Saddi. Sheikh Saddi put on one of the gorgeous dresses and set out for his home. On his way back home, Sheikh Saadi again took shelter in the same courtier’s house. At that time, the courtier received him cordially and entertained him with rich and delicious food. Then Sheikh Saadi began to put his food in his pockets. Seeing this, the courtier’s men were very surprised. They said to Sheikh Saddi, “Why are you putting the food in your pockets?” Saadi replied, “I’m doing the right thing. Some days ago, when I came to your house in a simple dress, nobody cared for me. Now, I’m in a gorgeous dress and all of you are showing much respect to me and serving me different types of rich and delicious food. I think it is not for me but my dress deserves this food. So, I’m putting the food in my pockets.” On hearing this, the courtier understood his fault and begged pardon from Sheikh Saadi.

শেখ সাদী পারস্যের একজন বড় কবি ছিলেন। জীবন যাপনে তিনি ছিলেন খুবই সাদাসিদে। তিনি সব সময় সাদামাটা ও সাধারণ পোশাক পরতেন। একবার ইরানের সম্রাট শেখ সাদীকে তার প্রাসাদে আমন্ত্রণ জানান। শেখ সাদীর বাড়ি থেকে প্রাসাদটি অনেক দূরে ছিল। তিনি একটি সাধারণ পোশাকে সম্রাটের প্রাসাদের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হলেন। পথে এক রাজসভাসদের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেন। রাজসভাসদ এবং তার লোকেরা তাকে খুব একটা সম্মান ও আতিথেয়তা দেখায়নি। আসলে তারা তাকে চিনতে পারেনি। শেখ সাদীও তার পরিচয় প্রকাশ করেননি। তাই শেখ সাদীকে একজন সাধারণ মানুষ ভেবে তারা তাকে অতি সাধারণ খাবার দিয়ে আপ্যায়ন করেছিলেন। শেখ সাদী রাজসভাসদরের বাড়িতে এক রাত অবস্থান করেন। সকালে তিনি রাজসভাসদরের বাড়ি থেকে বের হয়ে আবার সম্রাটের প্রাসাদের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হলেন। একসময় তিনি সম্রাটের প্রাসাদে পৌঁছান। সম্রাটের প্রাসাদে পৌঁছানোর পর সম্রাট তাকে অনেক সম্মান দেখালেন এবং ভালোভাবে আপ্যায়ন করলেন। শেখ সাদী কিছু দিন সম্রাটের প্রাসাদে অবস্থান করেন। বাড়িতে ফেরার সময় সম্রাট শেখ সাদীকে কিছু জাকালো পোশাক উপহার দেন । শেখ সাদী একটি জাকালো পোশাক পরে তার বাড়ির উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হলেন। বাড়ি ফেরার পথে শেখ সাদী আবার একই রাজসভাসদরের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেন। এ সময় রাজসভাসদরা তাকে সৌহার্দ্যপূর্ণভাবে গ্রহণ করেন এবং সমৃদ্ধ ও সুস্বাদু খাবার দিয়ে আপ্যায়ন করেন। তারপর শেখ সাদী তার খাবার পকেটে ঢুকাতে লাগলেন। এটা দেখে রাজসভাসদরের লোকেরা খুব অবাক হল। তারা শেখ সাদীকে বললেন, "আপনি খাবার পকেটে ঢুকাচ্ছেন কেন?" সাদী উত্তর দিলেন, “আমি ঠিক কাজটা করছি। কিছু দিন আগে যখন সাদামাটা পোশাকে আপনাদের বাসায় আমি এসেছিলাম, কেউ আমাকে পাত্তা দেয়নি। এখন আমি একটি জাকালো পোশাক পরে আছি এবং আপনারা সবাই আমাকে অনেক সম্মান করছেন এবং আমাকে নানান ধরণের সমৃদ্ধ ও সুস্বাদু খাবার পরিবেশন করছেন। আমি মনে করি এটা আমি না কিন্তু আমার পোশাক এই খাবার প্রাপ্য। তাই আমি আমার পকেটে খাবার ঢুকাচ্ছি।" একথা শুনে রাজসভাসদ তার দোষ বুঝতে পারলেন এবং শেখ সাদীর কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করলেন।
