Once there lived an honest woodcutter in a village. The village was near a forest. The woodcutter cut wood in that forest and sold it in his nearby market to maintain his family. He was very poor but honest. One day, a strange thing happened. The woodcutter was cutting wood by the riverside in the forest as usual. While cutting wood, his axe suddenly fell from his hands into the river. After that, the woodcutter became very worried because he thought that without an axe how he would cut wood and maintain his family. Thinking this, he started crying. Suddenly, a water goddess appeared before him and asked him why he was crying. Then the woodcutter described the whole incident in detail to the water goddess. On hearing everything from the woodcutter, the water goddess dived into the river and appeared before the woodcutter with a golden axe. She asked the woodcutter if this axe was his. Then the woodcutter said that it was not his axe. Again, the water goddess dived into the river and appeared before him with a silver axe. The woodcutter said that it was not his axe either. Then the water goddess again dived into the river and appeared with an iron axe. Seeing the axe, the woodcutter laughed and said that it was his axe. The water goddess was impressed by the honesty of the woodcutter and gave him all three axes.

একদা এক গ্রামে এক সৎ কাঠুরিয়া বাস করতেন। গ্রামটা ছিল একটি জঙ্গলের কাছে। কাঠুরিয়া সেই জঙ্গলে কাঠ কেটে পাশের বাজারে বিক্রি করে সংসার চালাতেন। তিনি অত্যন্ত দরিদ্র কিন্তু সৎ ছিলেন। একদিন এক অদ্ভুত ঘটনা ঘটল। কাঠুরিয়া প্রতিদিনের মত নদীর ধারে বনে কাঠ কাটছিলেন। কাঠ কাটতে গিয়ে হঠাৎ তার হাত থেকে তার কুড়ালটি নদীতে পড়ে যায়। এরপর কাঠুরিয়া খুবই চিন্তিত হয়ে পড়েন কারণ তিনি ভাবলেন কুড়াল ছাড়া তিনি কিভাবে কাঠ কেটে তার সংসার চালাবেন। এই ভেবে তিনি কাঁদতে লাগলেন। হঠাৎ এক জলদেবী তার সামনে এসে হাজির হয়ে তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন কেন তিনি কাঁদছেন। তারপর কাঠুরিয়া জলদেবীর কাছে সমস্ত ঘটনাটি বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা করলেন। কাঠুরিয়ার নিকট থেকে সব শুনে জলদেবী নদীতে ডুব দিলেন এবং সোনার একটি কুড়াল নিয়ে কাঠুরিয়ার সামনে হাজির হলেন। সে কাঠুরিয়াকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল এই কুড়ালটি তার কিনা। তখন কাঠুরিয়া বললেন এটা তার কুড়াল না। জলদেবী আবার নদীতে ডুব দিলেন এবং একটি রূপার কুড়াল নিয়ে তার সামনে হাজির হলেন। কাঠুরিয়া বললেন এটাও তার কুড়াল না। তারপর জলদেবী আবার নদীতে ডুব দিলেন এবং একটি লোহার কুড়াল নিয়ে হাজির হলেন। কুড়ালটি দেখে কাঠুরিয়া হেসে বললেন এটা তার কুঠার। কাঠুরিয়ার সততা দেখে জলদেবী মুগ্ধ হয়ে তাকে তিনটি কুড়ালই দিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন।
